Who was Lucifer? Many people think that Lucifer is the original name for Satan, or the devil, an evil being opposed to God. But this is just not true. In fact, Lucifer is not an external being, and the entire concept of Satan in the Western world is inaccurate. Lucifer, Satan, and the devil represent something much more important than an external celestial being that is the archenemy of God and mankind. This blog post will discuss what Lucifer and Satan really mean and how they relate to us. Since the Bible is a book that explains you, the holy temple, the esoteric truth about Lucifer can help you to realize more about your soul and purpose on this earth than any literal rendition of the scriptures about Satan ever could.
It is best to start with the term Lucifer because when I show you that how the connection between Lucifer and the Western concept of Satan came to be, you will have the foundational knowledge to understand why mainstream religion has become the epitome of spiritual stagnation instead of a vehicle for lasting and effectual spiritual transformation.
Many people might be surprised to learn that Lucifer is only used once in the entire Bible.
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!” (Isaiah 14:12).
So how did the idea of Lucifer being the original name of Satan get started? During the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD the scriptures slowly begin to lose their esoteric significance in favor of a more literal interpretation by some of the early church fathers. The deal was sealed when Eusebius, a church historian, tied the New Testament to the Old Testament via literal history. Suddenly, a well-known scripture from the Gospel of Luke—when interpreted literally— became responsible for the masses believing Lucifer of The Old Testament was the archenemy of God and mankind. Jesus states:
“…I beheld Satan as lightning falling from heaven” (Luke 10:18).
It is easy to see that the Biblical author of Luke relates this scripture to Isaiah 14:12. The imagery is the same. It would also seem that Jesus is referring to Satan as Lucifer. It is true that these authors are relating Lucifer and Satan, but not as a literal external being. If Jesus were really referring to Satan and Lucifer as an external being, then we have a big problem for two reasons: first, Revelations chapter 12 makes it clear that Satan is in heaven (not fallen from it) as the “dragon”; and secondly because many scriptures in the Bible refer to Jesus under the same title and meaning of Lucifer.
Lucifer means the morning star. Jesus is also referred to as the bright and morning star (Rev. 22:16). In 2 Peter 1:19, Christ is also known as the “day star” which carries the same equivalence.
So what’s going on here? Are Jesus and Satan the same? All this will become clear providing the explanation below:
Heaven is a state of being in your mind (For more on this see my article entitled Where is Heaven?). The war in heaven has to do with the war of angels and demons in your head as thoughts and manifestations of mind. In the Old Testament, thoughts and manifestations of the mind were known as the different nations and tribes that the Israelites had to eradicate in order to obtain the Promised Land. In essence, the Promised Land is symbolic of enlightenment. Perhaps now you understand why God told the Israelites to kill every man, woman, and child in the camp of their enemies. If this were literal, could we really call God merciful? Of course not! Every man, woman, and child in the enemy camp symbolized ego-driven thoughts of the mind.
When trying to attain enlightenment, or Christ consciousness, it is important to eradicate (not grasp onto) any thoughts and manifestations of the mind. That’s why God was so adamant about slaying every last person in the enemy camp. If one thought goes unchecked, it blossoms into many more.
So what’s this got to do with Lucifer and Satan? Simple. Both terms represent the ego!
Think back to the verse of Isaiah 14:12. Lucifer is compared to the prideful King of Babylon. Why does this scripture also say that Lucifer is responsible for “weakening the nations?” The ego has always been responsible for this. Just as ancient kings destroyed nations so has the ego. Think of Hitler and Stalin.
We can also relate Lucifer to another famous Biblical character: Adam! That’s why Lucifer is explained as being “cut to the ground,” and “kicked out of heaven.” Just as Lucifer was kicked from heaven, so too, was Adam expelled from Paradise (heaven as a state of being). If you have already read my article on Adam and Eve: The Story of Human Consciousness, then you understand that Adam represents the conscious mind (which is ego-driven) and Eve represents the subconscious. When Adam was kicked out of the Garden, the act is symbolic of the fracturing of our minds into an ego-driven reality. This creates duality and the physical plane.
So if all this is the case, we still have another question to address:
1) Why is Lucifer and Jesus compared with light?
The answer becomes obvious when you understand that Christ and Satan are terms that describe something “within” you, not outside of you. When you understand the scripture literally by interpreting the characters and events in Bible as historical, literal events, you will inevitably come up with contradictions. For example, we have already discussed how the Israelites killing innocent babies and women would not represent the acts of a merciful God. Therefore, this act is symbolic of a person who is on a spiritual journey to the Promised Land and must extinguish thoughts and manifestation of the mind keeping them from enlightenment. But at the same time that the ego brings hardship, it is also a light bearer. Why? Because the ego has the potential to be transformed into the light! The “fall” from Paradise and subsequent manifestation of an ego-driven reality were necessary. Without the “fall,” we would never have the opportunity to spiritually mature. In fact, this is how we become a Christ and a true son of God.
Remember, God is a father of lights (James 1:17). Each one of us represents little lights (seeds of potential) for awakening Christ consciousness within us. The first Adam (of Genesis) is a physical being, the second Adam is a spiritual being (the Christ), which has to be manifested “within” you. This is the main message of the New Testament. It is the born-again experience and resurrection!
In this way, Christ and Satan are one in the same, and both are the potential inside of you, in the kingdom of your mind!
In order to become the Christ, you have to work through the potential of the ego. Then you symbolically crucify it by going deep “within.” That’s why you are here on the physical plane in the first place. The ego becomes an opportunity then.
In closing, Lucifer and Satan are your ego. Faith, prayer, and meditation help you to crucify your ego (with all its manifested thoughts) to realize the true you within.
How does this Knowledge Help You?
Most people live an ego-driven life. The mind is constantly manifesting ego-driven thoughts. The key is to learn not to identify your true self with those thoughts. Thoughts come and go, just like the ego begins at birth and goes at death. That’s also why Satan is described as masquerading as the light, because most people think their ego is the real them, their true light. But becoming an observer of your thoughts for awhile without judging them, you began to understand how insane the mind can be. Go meditate for a few moments by trying to concentrate on one thing. If you’ve never tried it, you’ll soon learn that the mind is its own driver; thoughts pop into and out of it all the time with neither rhyme nor reason to them.
Most people have not taken the time to realize this. They are so identified with their thoughts that they inherently believe that that is who they are. Because of this, they are consciously unaware of their connection to the potential Christ within them. Their true spiritual potential is never nurtured and they live and die as an ego-driven individual.
The key to all this is meditating. As Romans 2:29 states:
“But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart (mind)…” A spiritual Jew meditates, and he is circumcised because he cuts off the identification with his true self from his thoughts. This is the esoteric understand of circumcision! That’s also why Satan masquerades as the light, because most people think their ego is the real them, their true light.

An interesting take on Lucifer! And although we have different ideas on Jesus / Lucifer, we’ve come to the similar conclusion that they are one! Archangel Lucifer helped make this “Earth Experiment” that allows spiritual growth through hardship and struggle (a fast way to grow) possible, and Jesus Christ (his physical incarnation) helped with bringing an end to this particular type of experience by teaching humanity the transformation possible through connecting with the divine within. (The way I see it, the one who made the experience of duality possible is the one who gets to have a big role in ending it successfully.)
Thanks Josh!

Hi Christine,
Maybe we should not equate Jesus with Lucifer in this respect but Christ. We often talk about Jesus Christ as if Christ were his family name. Well, it is of course but then, it is yours and mine also. Come to think of it, it is your first name too!
Within this context however we should compare or equate Lucifer with Christ. Jesus became an embodiment of Christ and so should we.
Great comment by the way, and great article Joshua.

And why? It’s because it’s now time to “wrap up” this type of experience … because many are wrapping up “learning their lessons the hard way.” And because of these hard lessons, life from this point forward will be so much more appreciated, enjoyed, understood, cherished, etc than if this “experiment” never happened.

Wow. You have really taken things out of context. I will just go with the closing scripture for sake of internet space here……Romans 2:29
But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
Jews are circumcised physically according to the letter….which was the written commandments by Moses of God, circumcision of the heart is spiritual the cutting away of the ‘flesh’ (flesh vs. spiritual) ‘ego’ if that is word you choose, and not in the letter which means the letter of the laws of Moses….the written words of it because it is written in your heart when you have been spiritually circumcised. But someone wrote that in your heart…..not YOU, God did that. It was written in your heart so that the Glory would go to God, and not to men because it is written spiritually in your heart and not just something you physically follow so that men don’t give YOU the glory instead of God.
-That is what this is saying.
-Though this type of article seems so spiritual, rather than test the spirits people just jump onboard and believe anything. People you need to search these things out and quit taking other people’s words for it. It is GOD that opens our eyes to the truth, not people pulling things out text trying to sound like they have some spiritual insight that nobody else has stumbled upon. God does this, not YOU, You aren’t God and if you believe that, you are already deceived.
This Christ Consciousness is a bunch of new age nonsense, and this stuff about ‘Jesus being YOU’ on the inside is NOT what the scriptures are saying…..they are saying that Christ lives inside you, when you are his. You being Christ is the oldest lie ever told because that lie took place in the garden of Eden long before you swallowed it.
And to the writer of this article……..If you really knew your Bible…..you wouldn’t have to make it say things that it doesn’t. Yes, the Bible is spiritual and deep, yes, most who quote it don’t see any more than what is written on the pages (to their shame), but in what spirit are you using to refer to it? Lucifer/Satan knows the Bible too, as he quoted it to Jesus a few times himself……..out of context. Sound familiar?
Revelation 20:2 says it as plain as day folks: Look it up people!
And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
If you are going to quote the Bible sir, quote all of it…..not just the pieces that make your story sound like some sort of spiritual enlightenment!

Natalie,
Thanks for sharing your views. I used to believe the exact same thing. However remember that Jesus said the kingdom is within us and that it doesn’t come through observation. I was in church for most of my life listening to sermons that taught me to believe and think just as you have stated above, but then I began to question why The LAW is not followed anymore when the God of the Old Testament clearly says it is eternal. Saying Jesus already fulfilled the law so we don’t have to doesn’t cut it because of the last chapter of Malachi, particularly the last few verses. Read them carefully. Thanks for reading, and as always, I respect your opinions and wish you the best!

Thank you, all, for your insights–I am thankful that I discovered this website! For a long time I have really wondered how literal certain parts of the Bible were, and also if many of the stories were meant to be parables.
I’m glad that the ancient writers took the time to write, and that their writings have endured (hopefully) for our benefit and spiritual growth—-however, as these ancient books were being written, I hope the “inspired” authors operated under the sure fore-knowledge that their words WERE going to be interpreted in a number of ways, and that disagreements (sometimes awful ones) were going to result.
Now, I am not going to claim that all of this is the result of the “devil” ! ! Somewhere in all of this, I hope that people will reach the stage where they assume responsibility for their decisions and actions, and not blame “the devil” every time they do something wrong. We have the power to live lives transformed by the beauty of holiness.
Very Interesting how “Lucifer” is mentioned once in the entire Bible! Is it possible that “Lucifer” has been made out to be larger than “he” is? I admit it has been confusing to read the account of the fall in Genesis where the tempter is a talking “serpent” (an allegory???) that finds his way into God’s “very good” creation (?)——–and later on, in the book of Job, I read how “Satan” appears with the assembled “sons of God” in heaven on surprisingly businesslike terms with God, with his vile attentions focused way too much on the good man Job! I wonder if this happened before he “fell like lightning” from heaven?? Apparently he had the luxury of a soft landing! In Job’s story, God and Satan are acting in collusion. Still later on, in Isaiah, we read “how art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning ( I gather this term is complementary)… …..” with additional phraseology that is very allegorical , referring to the results of pride (a hard landing, so to speak). Your thoughtful post has given me a lot to think about, and I thank you for sharing!

I just want to tell you that I LOVE your site. I have been on a spiritual quest my entire life. I was raised in the Christian church camp being told ” God loves you and will burn you in hell forever if you sin against him. All you have to do is believe in Jesus and you will be saved”. I remember asking my father, around the age of 8, if he loves me why would he burn me in hell forever ? He is suppose to love me more than you, would you burn me forever? My questions NEVER were answered to my satisfaction.
I am now almost 50. I had left the church in my early 20’s. I studied the old testament and Judaism inside out. Then I studied other religions. Hindu, Buddhism, Tao, and so on. The one thing I noticed is that all of them teach the one basic teaching – LOVE. Self love and love of others. I then turned to the study of Metaphysics and that Bible became a beautiful work of art for the first time.
I applaud your work and that you are sharing it. Well done my brother. Namaste.

Eureka! “In closing, Lucifer and Satan are your ego.”
Where have you been all of my life! I’ve been thinking this for years but could find no one to have this conversation.
One of my closest friends has just accepted Jesus but is gets lost, depressed and confused. Her latest confusion came from The Garden of Eden which prompted me to do a search for the meaning of the story and thus led me to your blog.
Hopefully, she can open her mind to see the spirit of the scripture rather than literal meanings.
So happy to have found you. It’s refreshing to see that even when you are opposed, you remain ego free and wish that person well. I subscribed to your blog and look forward to reading as much as I can.

Barbara,
Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. As for your friend, it is very hard for us to go from a literal understanding only to see the scriptures as allegory, but it seems your friend is at least courageous enough to question things, such as the Garden of Eden story. That’s the first step. Hopefully she keeps questioning.

Hi Joshua
Loved your explanation above. Some time ago it became clear to me that if the “kingdom of heaven/God” was within You (not the individuate local mind, but rather the ‘collective unconscious’ Mind of which the ‘individual unconscious’ is but a local node) then the metaphorical ‘warfare’ between Michael (I Am One) and Satan (the primary egoic thought ‘I am legion’ I am separated and special) and their associated “angels” – is a symbolic warfare between two opposite thought systems (a bit like the Real and It’s shadow side – perhaps Yang and Yin?). And hence ‘demons’ are merely illusory beliefs (that cannot be made Real or Gnosis) that must be corrected (cast out of the ‘kingdom’) just as the metaphorical ‘goats’ must be cast out — and finally the core erroneous thought of separation itself put upon the ‘scapegoat’ and allowed to ‘die’ in the metaphorical wilderness because we as ‘fit men’ [sic] no longer give it any sustaining ‘ food or water.
Just one very minor comment on a phrase you used above. You wrote, “This creates duality and the physical plane.” I would agree, but would add the words ‘seeming’ and ‘apparent’- “This creates the seeming duality and the apparent physical plane.” In my understanding, there is only Mind in Reality and all seeming materiality is ‘ideation’ that has not left its source any more than a nite-time dream leaves its source. I asked myself some time ago “what would a dream look like if it were dreamt by an infinite timeless Mind” and I looked around and realised it would look like this. To my present understanding it is all Mind or all ‘matter’ and if it is all the latter is doesn’t matter, because nothing would matter. Meaning can only by in Mind not matter! It seems to me that when Mind is depicted as Love Itself it – and any up separated extension of Itself – must contain at least one-degree-of-freedom — but not the freedom to change Itself, for in so doing It would destroy Itself – hence the only way that Love could have any choice would be for It to ‘see’ and experience – in the unReality of a cosmic dream – all that It was NOT so that It would have the full gnosis of what It is and why It could only be what It is …. If that makes any sense? This prodigal journey into the collective arena of consciousness is Love’s only permitted ‘choice’. Ephemeral and seemingly real in all its fullness but only Maya.
Namaste
Phil

But there is an eternity, an eternity of change. Think about it: would an eternity of being static, or reaching a certain goal, be satisfying, to then spend one’s state in that eternity? It is said the the universe goes through periods of in-breathing and out-breathing. perhaps the big bang ends in a big crunch, and then the cycle repeats itself. If there is some aspect of consciousness which continually gains and experiences from this, then all good. If something is ultimately annialiated and then reborn, then all good. New game begins again, with another round of infinite scenarios.

Hi Josh,
You are doing a very wonderful job. More grease to your elbow. Of many esoteric writers, you came near to explaining the enigma of Lucifer, son of the morning. You rightly pointed out that Lucifer is the human ego, but Lucifer is not the morning star; the name Lucifer means Light bringer. If we follow KJV, from which other translators copied from, Lucifer was called, ‘son of the morning’ and not the morning star. I started a blog recently and wrote an article on Lucifer. The title is: The enigma of Lucifer, son of the morning. My blog address is: baptismalmysteries.blogspot.com.ng. Please visit this blog and read this article on Lucifer. I’ll like to know your thoughts on this subject after reading through. This is a humble request.
Thank you.

Lucifer= Horus= phosphorus
It sinks from the head-vein or heaven due to the misuse of the magnetic and electrical energetic fields in the body. This is what religion is based on loving the father/ather/ether and your neighbor as yourself. This slowly realigns all the magnetic and electrical fields in the body and raises the Lucifer back to his position in heaven and at the right hand of the father the pineal gland and the pituitary gland. This makes you a receiver and transmitter of the Great spirit or father/ather/ether in which we move reside and have our being. We are only his hands and feet doing his will. whether consciously or subconsciously everything works out according to the plan so that we can all become Sons of God.

3. Repentance and Sin not what you think
“Repentance” [which in the bible is spelled] metanoia literally means something
like a “change of mind,” even a change in attention. [Literally turning toward
anothe focus. Turning away from “sin”, that is mistakes, and instead
turning within, not outward toward the world]
the stone the rock that the builder rejected is peter. He becomes the chief corner stone .
Lucifer has fallen o sun of the morning (the light bringer) venus the feminine subconscious mind .
Just as Venus rises before the sun . Your subconscious wakes before the conscience mind the masculine
the Christ your Savior . We operate from the subconscious mind most of the day
Peter the rock the stone. Peter you will deny me 3 times before the cock crows in the morning at the rises of lucifer the bride of christ we lose our conscience mind and go back to sleep as tom or who ever .
So this is the first stone in the building of the temple not build with hands the mind.
We have to marry the christ conscience mind to the feminine subconscious .
Nathan Koldys says
Dear Josh,
I have been able to understand that Lucifer and Satan are two impulses within us. They are also external entities having been given form through the process of the egregore.
Lucifer is the dematerializing force. It is the spiritual impulse to evolve which is necessary for our release from the cycle of death and rebirth. But this is taken to an extreme by those who would only believe that the life of the spirit is important. Failing to materialize in our entirety and as such fail at becoming fully human in the earth. That materializing impulse or force is something else.
The idea of Satan has come to represent different aspects of humanity, but the impulse behind Satan was essential to our spiritual evolution. For the sake of distinguishing the two, I will call this force Ahriman, as the Anthroposophical Society does. Ahriman is Lucifer’s opposite in pure form. It is the impulse to densify and fall into the material realm. Satan is the force that that describes the abuse of that impulse. The total loss of knowledge that we are in fact spiritual beings. Denying this, we seek out all things that offer temporary relief from the hardships of existing in this lower density. These become obsessions and as a result, those who wed themselves to these Satanic impulses OVERdensify. In fact, they may become too dense to incarnate at all.
Although we have yet to see it on earth, the Satanic impulse will one day soon incarnate. It will look and act human, and will be by some calculations, but contains no soul essence whatsoever.
Both of these impulses Ahriman and Lucifer, existed in some form at the dawn of creation, but did so in their purest forms and only in the spiritual realms. As time went on, the more humanity fed those forces disproportionally, the more of a consciousness they themselves developed. So Lucifer can be said to be the shadow manifestation of the Lucifer impulse, which was neutral. The same with Ahriman. The reason why these can both be called Satan as one thing, is that they both lead to the same place from a profound lack of understanding with ourselves of what we are doing here and who we are.
The force that was introduced to balance the over spiritualization and the over materialization impulses was Christ. Jesus of a Nazareth embodied this force. He is the physical form representing the highest expression of the perfect balance. If Ahriman is the root chakra and Lucifer the crown chakra, Jesus is the heart chakra. Note his teachings primarily centered around love. Love is manifested by the heart. Look at early iconography depicting Jesus. He’s always pointing to the heart. The Sacred Heart is scared because it is where our Christ consciousness resides and can be developed.
Love to you, Josh. Thank you for letting me share.
